Rural e-commerce empowers characteristic industries

Recently, a cadre of Shuangtang Subdistrict Office of Jishou City encouraged locals to sign up for free e-commerce training sessions provided by the local government in a WeChat group.

After Jishou City was approved as a national comprehensive demonstration city for e-commerce in rural areas in 2021, it has cultivated new growth points for characteristic industries and created new consumer demands through a new model of e-commerce plus agricultural culture and tourism.

Characteristic agricultural products like Xiangxi Golden Tea, Baiyun Tribute Rice and Xiangxi Cured Meat have gone out of Xiangxi through e-commerce platforms.

To promote the construction of the national comprehensive demonstration project for developing e-commerce in rural areas, and create a new model of e-commerce assisting farmers, the public e-commerce service center of Jishou City has expanded income growth channels in rural areas and steadily increased farmers’ income through e-commerce training sessions.

Xiangfeng Food Company is one of the enterprises that have settled in the center. The company’s head has participated in several rural e-commerce skills training sessions. She said that Xiangxi termite mushroom oil, termite mushroom oil pepper and wild kudzu root powder are deeply loved by customers. But the original offline sales volume was small, with annual sales of about 2 million yuan.

By participating in these training sessions, she learned about the large development potential of the prosperous e-commerce sales. Now, the company has organized livestreaming teams and worked to promote Jishou’s characteristic products.

The tea plantation of Xiangxi Banshanhong Tea Company is located in Mipo Village, Majin’ao Town, Jishou City, covering an area of about 100 mu (about 6.67 hectares).

Tian Meisong, general manager of the company, said that through e-commerce platforms, as well as other channels like supermarkets and stores, the overall sales of tea last year were about 750 kg worth about 500,000 yuan. There will be tea orders if we broadcast on Douyin.

In recent years, many tea farmers and enterprises in Jishou City have tried to launch livestreaming events, helping expand the tea industrial chain through e-commerce.

In Jishou, there are dozens of enterprises and about one hundred people promoting and selling Xiangxi Green Tea and Black Tea through e-commerce platforms like Xiangxi Banshanhong Tea Company.

In 2023, Jishou achieved a tea sales revenue of 50 million yuan through live streaming, an increase of 20% compared to the previous year.

In October last year, the public e-commerce service center focused on creating a live broadcast room of the first village secretary. As of now, 62 sessions of live streaming were launched to promote agricultural products of Jishou City.

Since its launch, it has received 120,000 orders, with a total of over 5 million viewers and over 60 million clicks. Over 5 million yuan of agricultural products have been sold, contributing 600,000 yuan in dividends to the village collective economy and increasing individual income by about 2,000 yuan.

By establishing e-commerce stations and integrating community group buying, convenient services, and other businesses, the city aims to help villagers get rich through e-commerce.

Bayao Village of Danqing Town is 31.5 kilometers away from the city center, with many left-behind elderly people and women. After gaining a detailed understanding of relevant policies, the local villager Zhang Yuanhua actively participated in the construction of the village e-commerce station.

With the help of the public e-commerce service center, Zhang Yuanhua became the head of the village e-commerce station. The service center also provides business guidance for her.

At the same time, Zhang Yuanhua learned how to sell agricultural products on online platforms through e-commerce training sessions.

Now, Zhang Yuanhua helps villagers sell pickled Chinese cabbage, dried pickled cowpea and pickled shallot, with monthly sales of more than 10,000 yuan.

In recent years, Jishou City has attached great importance to the work of assisting agriculture through e-commerce, and has achieved results in areas such as e-commerce, resource integration, and talent training.

Jishou City will make unremitting efforts in the field of e-commerce, and promote the development of rural industries, sales of characteristic agricultural products, and revitalization of the agricultural and animal husbandry economy, in a bid to provide strong impetus for rural revitalization through new quality productive forces.
